Day 3: MONTEVERDE CLOUD FOREST
After breakfast at Colours, you will be taken by Shuttle Bus to a gay-friendly hotel in the lovely Monteverde Cloud Forest area, about four hours away. The Spanish translation for Monteverde is “green mountain” – the perfect name for this peaceful, hillside community. Monteverde was founded by a Quaker community over 50 years ago, and contains an astounding amount of biodiversity: nearly 400 different types of bird species; two types of sloth, the white-faced monkey, agoutis, pizotes, kinkajous, porcupines, foxes, coyotes, armadillos, bats, reptiles, frogs and non-venomous snakes, just to name a few! The lush green Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is noted for great bird watching, especially the elusive resplendent quetzal with its crimson breast and iridescent green plumage.
The highlight is an exciting afternoon canopy tour that allows you to glide through the treetops of the cloud forest on a system of zip line cables in the cloud forest canopy.
The evening is yours to enjoy as you wish. You’ll have to look after your own lunch and dinner.
Day 4: ARENAL VOLCANO
The morning is yours to enjoy as you will, perhaps a quick jaunt through the unique Cloud Forest Reserve. After lunch you’ll take the fastest and most scenic route between the Monteverde cloud forest and the Arenal Volcano and of the unspoiled, man-made Lake Arenal: the land-water-land transfer. First it’s two-hours overland to the village of Río Chiquito, then a 30-minute boat ride across Lake Arenal to the dam, plus another half hour overland to a gay-friendly hotel in the Arenal/La Fortuna area. The majestic Arenal Volcano attracts thousands and thousands of tourists thanks to its extraordinary and never-ending volcanic activity, on clear nights roaring like a thousand lions and spewing intermittent explosions of ash and lava in a splendid display of nature’s own fireworks.
The evening is yours to enjoy as you wish. You’ll have to look after your own lunch and dinner.
